X01

Play down to zero. The classic of every pub and every TV final.

The idea

Every player starts with the same score, usually 501, and subtracts what they throw. Whoever gets to exactly zero first wins the leg. The catch is the end: with the standard double out, the last dart has to land in a double. The bullseye counts as a double too (double 25 = 50).

A visit

A visit is three darts. Their sum comes off your score, and the caller announces it. The best possible visit is 180: three treble 20s. The fewest darts for 501 are nine, the perfect leg.

Bust

Throw more than you have left, and the whole visit counts for nothing: your score goes back to where it was before the visit, and it is the next player’s turn. With double out it is also a bust to leave exactly 1, because nobody can finish 1 on a double, or to reach zero with a dart that isn’t a double.

Rules you can set

  • Starting score101, 201, 301, 501, 701, 901 or 1001, or Custom with anything from 2 to 9999. 501 is the standard, 301 is quicker, 701 and more suit teams.
  • Check-outDouble Out (the default): the last dart must be a double or the bullseye. Master Out: a double or a treble. Single Out: any field finishes, the easiest for beginners.
  • Double InOff by default. On: your score only starts to move once you hit a double. That double already counts; every dart before it scores nothing.
  • LegsOne leg, first to 2, first to 3, or any number up to 99.
  • SetsNone, first to 2, first to 3, or more. With sets, every set is won by the first to the number of legs above, and then the legs start again from zero.
  • Who throws firstThe top of the list, a bull-off or random. From the second leg on, the first throw moves on to the next player.

Handicaps

To make a match between a beginner and a strong player fair, give each player their own X01 rules. Small tags next to the name show what differs from the game.

  • Own starting score: the beginner plays 301 while the pro plays 501.
  • Own check-out: Single Out for a child, Master Out or Double Out for everyone else.
  • Own double in: on for the strong player only.

Checkout help

With double out and 170 or less left, the app shows a way out for the darts you still have, for example T20 · D20 for 100, and marks the next target on the board. Where no finish exists, it says No finish possible: with three darts that is 169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 and 159. With master or single out, a reminder of the rule appears from 60 left. You can switch the help off under Settings → Throw suggestion, and the caller can call your rest: “You require 40”.

Statistics

  • 3-dart averagePoints per three darts, the key figure in darts. A bust counts as a visit with zero.
  • First 9The average of the first nine darts of every leg: how well you score before the finish.
  • Checkout rateFinishes divided by the darts you threw while one dart could have finished.
  • Highest checkoutYour biggest finish. 170 is the maximum.
  • Best legThe fewest darts for a won leg.
  • Best visit, 100+, 140+, 180Your highest visit and how often you scored a ton, a ton-forty and the maximum.

Leaderboards and records

X01 matches feed the leaderboards for average, highest finish, best leg, 180s and checkout rate. Only games of one person on their own count: not for a bot or a team, not with a handicap, and only with the standard choices of the setup screen, such as a starting score from the list. A custom score is perfectly fine to play, it just doesn’t go on the boards.

Tips

  • New to darts? Start with 301 and single out, then move on to double out.
  • Finishing is where legs are won. Practise with Checkout King and 121 under Training.
  • Club night: 501 double out, first to 3 legs, bull-off for the first throw.
