Get close to 100, but never over it

Three players, nine darts each. Ben goes to 102 and is out. Anna lands exactly on 100 with two darts of her last visit, Cleo stops on 99, so Anna wins. Drawn the way the app shows it.

The rules

How Nine-Dart Century works

Every point counts, right up to the one that takes you over.

  1. Nine darts to 100Everyone throws three visits in turn. Your darts add up over all nine, and the total is what you play with.
  2. Over 100 and you’re outThe dart that takes you past the target ends your leg there and then. Your total no longer counts.
  3. A dart off the board costs everythingIn the classic rules a dart that misses the board puts your total back to 0. You carry on from there with the darts you have left.
  4. Exactly 100 ends your dartsLand on the target and you are done, even with darts left in your hand.
  5. The best total winsOnce everyone is through, the best total at or under 100 wins the leg. If two players share it, the leg is drawn.

Nine darts

Three visits, one running total

Anna’s leg, dart by dart. Under every dart you see the total it leaves, just like in the app.

Smaller numbers now. 26 more points take her to 92.

    Exactly 100!

A 5 and a 3 make exactly 100. That ends her darts, the third one stays in her hand.

Going over

One point too many and you’re out

The closer you get, the smaller the numbers you can afford.

Off the board

Back to 0

Cleo is on 72 after two visits. Her next dart misses the board and wipes the lot, so her last two darts start again from 0.

Settings

Two settings to play with

The defaults are the classic game. A higher target or a gentler miss rule changes how bold you can be.

  • Target100 · 150 · 200
    1. 100≈ 11 a dart
    2. 150≈ 17 a dart
    3. 200≈ 22 a dart

100 is the classic. 150 and 200 leave more room for big darts.

  • A dart off the boardBack to 0
    1. T20= 60
    2. 0Back to 0
    3. 20= 20
    Back to 020Counts 080

Back to 0 is the classic: a dart off the board wipes your total. With Counts 0 it just scores nothing.

In the game

What you see on screen

Your total is the big number in the middle. The panel shows everyone’s bar on the way to the target.

  • The total: it grows with every dart, next to what this visit has added. Above it you see the round and how much is left, for example Round 2/3 · 34 to go.
  • The hint line: it reads Get close to 100, but never over it, and changes to Exactly 100!, Over 100: out or Off the board: back to 0 when that happens.
  • The dart chips: under every dart the total it leaves, for example = 65, or Back to 0 and Bust.
  • The panel: one bar per player that fills up towards the target. Over it, the bar turns red and the total reads Bust.
  • A wrong dart? Tap its chip and correct it, as in every other mode. The total and the bar update with the correction.

Tips

How to finish closer to 100

  • Score early, steer late. Your first visit can go for the big numbers. By the last one you want small, safe singles.
  • Count your darts as well as your points. 100 in nine darts is about 11 a dart. If you are well ahead of that, slow down.
  • Watch the neighbours. Every low number sits next to big ones: the 3 between 19 and 17, the 1 between 20 and 18. Close to the target, a dart that drifts a little can take you over.
  • Keep every dart on the board. With Back to 0 a wild dart is worse than a low one. Late in the leg, aim for the middle of a single bed, not the edge of the board.
  • Know what you have to beat. If you throw last and the best total is 93, you only need 94. There is no prize for getting closer.
