Tennis Darts

Tennis on the dartboard. The board is the court, with a left half, a right half and the 20 and the 3 as the net. Your serve picks the number of the rally, your opponent has to beat your marks on it, and the score is kept like on court: 15, 30, 40, deuce and advantage.

  • Two players, or you against a bot
  • 3, 4 or 6 games a set
  • Aces, double faults and deuce
  • Unrated, so it never touches your average

Point to Ben

Anna serves at 30 all. Ben beats her 4 marks on the 19, Anna answers with an ace, then puts two darts into the net for a double fault, and Ben takes the game on the 1. Drawn the way the app shows it.

The rules

How Tennis darts works

A point is a serve and a return. Whoever wins it moves one step on in the game.

  1. The board is the courtThe left half is 5, 12, 9, 14, 11, 8, 16, 7 and 19. The right half is 1, 18, 4, 13, 6, 10, 15, 2 and 17. The 20 and the 3 are the net.
  2. Serve into the halfYour first dart in the half sets the number of the rally. Every dart on that number brings marks: a single 1, a double 2, a treble 3. A double with the very first dart is an ace, and two darts outside the half are a double fault.
  3. Return on the same numberThe receiver throws three darts at that number. More marks than the server win the point, fewer lose it. With the same number of marks the server throws again, then the receiver.
  4. Points, games and setsPoints go 15, 30, 40 and game, with deuce and advantage at 40 all. After every point the serve moves to the other half, and after every game the other player serves.

The court

Two halves and a net

The halves lie either side of the 20 and the 3, like the two ends of a tennis court.

  • Left half51291411816719

The first serve of every game goes in here.

  • Right half11841361015217

The next point is served into this half, then back to the left.

  • The net203

A serve on the 20 or the 3 is out, and so is the bull.

The serve

Set the rally

Four serves and what comes of them.

    1. 14Rally on 14
    2. T143 marks
    3. 141 mark
Beat 5 marks on the 14

The first dart in the half picks the number. It counts as a mark too, and the rest of the visit adds more: 5 marks for the receiver to beat.

    Ace!

A double in the half with the very first dart wins the point at once. The receiver doesn’t throw.

    2. D17Rally on 17
    3. T173 marks

The 3 is the net. The second dart still sets the rally, but a double now is just 2 marks, not an ace.

  • Double faultRight half

    Double fault

Two darts without a hit in the half: the net, then the wrong half. The point goes to the receiver.

The return

Beat the marks

The receiver gets three darts at the number of the rally.

    Anna4Ben3Closest finish: 4–3

A longer set. At 3–3 the next game decides it.

In the game

What you see on screen

The score table sits above the board, with the two halves listed underneath.

  • The score table: sets, games and the points of the game in progress, called 15, 30, 40, Deuce or Adv. A dot marks the player who serves.
  • The court: under the table you see Left half and Right half with their numbers. The half you serve into is lit, and once the rally is set, its number too.
  • The middle: Serve · Left half while you serve, then Return · 19 with the marks to beat in big figures.
  • The hint line: for example Hit a number in the left half. A double with the first dart is an ace, Beat 4 marks on the 19 or Level: the server throws again.
  • The dart chips: every dart shows what it did, such as Rally on 19, 3 marks, Out or Ace. Tap a chip to correct a dart, as in every other mode.

Setup

Start a game

Open Party & duels in the game setup and pick Tennis, or search for it by name. The rest works like any match.

  • PlayersExactly two. Play a friend at your board or a bot.
  • Games per set3, 4 or 6, 3 by default. See the settings.
  • LegsEvery leg is one set and starts at 0–0 in games. One leg, first to 2, first to 3, or more. The Sets column of the table counts them.
  • Who throws firstThe first player in the list, a bull-off or random. That player serves the first game. From the second leg on, the other player starts.
  • UnratedTennis doesn’t count towards your average, statistics or leaderboards. Only your wins are recorded.

Tips

How to win more points

  • Serve on a number you like. You choose the rally. Pick a number in the half that suits you and put as many marks on it as you can.
  • Risk the double with your first dart. If it lands, it’s an ace. If it misses the half, you still have a dart left to set the rally.
  • Play safe after an out. A second dart outside the half is a double fault. Aim for the big single rather than the double.
  • Keep away from the net. The 5 and the 1 sit next to the 20, the 19 and the 17 next to the 3. A serve that drifts towards the net is out.
  • A level return isn’t a lost point. With the same marks the server throws again, and then you get another return.
