Golf

Nine holes, par three, and the dartboard is your course. Every hole is a number, every dart a stroke count: a double is a hole in one, a miss a double bogey. Fewest strokes win.

  • Against friends or bots, at one board
  • 9 or 18 holes, par 3 each
  • Three courses, and the bull as the clubhouse
  • The classic rule: the last dart counts
  • Unrated: just for fun

Hole 7 of 9, drawn the way the app shows it. Anna finds the double 7 with her second dart: a hole in one, the hole is over and the board locks. Ben lands a triple for a birdie and stops right there: the last dart counts, so another one could only cost him.

The rules

How a round works

Everybody plays every hole, one visit each, in turn. Low scores are good: like in real golf, you count strokes, not points.

  1. Every hole is a numberHole 1 is the 1, hole 2 the 2, as in the pub game. Par is 3 on every hole: 27 for a round of nine, 54 for eighteen.
  2. Your dart is your stroke countDouble 1, triple 2, inner single 3, outer single 4, anything else 5. The number of the hole lights up on the dartboard, with every ring’s value written on it.
  3. The last dart countsThrow up to three darts, and the last one you throw is your score. Happy with a dart? Stop right there and press Next. A double is a hole in one: nothing can beat it, so the hole is over at once and the board locks.
  4. Fewest strokes winThe scorecard keeps every hole and shows where each player stands to par. After the last hole the fewest strokes take the leg.

The strokes

What a dart is worth

Five values, and the app writes them right onto the board. This is hole 14:

  1. 1
Double Hole in oneThe thin outer ring of the number. The hole is over at once: nothing can beat it.
  2. 2
    Triple BirdieThe thin inner ring.
  3. 3
Inner single ParThe fat part between the bull and the triple.
  4. 4
Outer single BogeyThe part between the triple and the double.
  5. 5
Anything else Double bogeyAnother number, the bull, a miss.

Why 9 and 18 holes? Like on a golf course: nine holes are a short round, eighteen the full one. As every hole is a number, a round can have up to 20 holes. The slider in the setup takes any number and marks the two usual ones, so they are a single tap away.

Setting · Course

Three courses

The course decides which number each hole is. The badges show the order of play:

  • 1, 2, 3 …Default

The pub rule: hole 1 is the 1, hole 2 the 2. The course zigzags across the board.

  • Round the board

Clockwise from the 20, neighbour after neighbour. A walk round the board.

  • Random

A new course every leg. No two rounds alike, and no number you can hide from.

The clubhouse: switch it on and one more hole waits at the end of the round: the bull. The bullseye is a hole in one, the 25 a birdie, anything else five strokes.

Setting · What counts

Last dart or best dart

The same three darts on hole 5, counted two ways:

  • Last dartDefault
    1. T5Birdie
    2. 5Bogey
    3. 0Double bogey
    5Double bogey

The classic rule: the last dart you throw counts. Happy after the triple? Stop and press Next, and it is a birdie. Throw on, and you have to live with the next one.

  • Best dartEasier
    1. T5Birdie
    2. 5Bogey
    3. 0Double bogey
    2Birdie

Your best dart counts. Throw all three without a worry: a bad dart after a good one costs nothing. A good start for beginners.

With the last dart counting you end a hole whenever you like: press Next or pull the darts. The app reminds you after every dart. A double ends the hole either way.

The scorecard

Every hole at a glance

The turn panel carries a real scorecard: the numbers of the holes on top, every player’s strokes in golf colours, the total and where each one stands to par. Gold is a hole in one, green a birdie, orange a bogey, red a double bogey.

In the game

What the screen tells you

Golf needs a little more explaining than most games, so the app does it while you play. Four things to know:

  • Where to aim

The number of the hole lights up on the dartboard, and every ring on it carries its strokes: 1 on the double, 2 on the triple, 3 and 4 on the singles.

    1. T7Birdie
    2. 7Par
    3. Dart 3
    1. 1Double
    2. 2Triple
    3. 3Inner single
    4. 4Outer single
    5. 5Miss
    What counts right now

Every dart shows its strokes in golf words. The last one thrown counts: it is framed, and its value lights up in the legend. Happy with it? The app reminds you that you may stop.

    1. D7Hole in one
    2. Dart 2
    3. Dart 3
    Hole in one

A double ends the hole: nothing can beat it. The board dims, its rim turns violet and a crossed-out dart stays on it until the darts are pulled.

  • The clubhouse

Switched on, one more hole waits at the end: the bull. The bullseye is a hole in one, the 25 a birdie.

  • The big number is the hole you aim at, not your score, with “Hole 4/9 · Par 3” above it. Your strokes sit on your player card and on the scorecard.
  • Player cards: every card shows the strokes so far and where that player stands to par, live during the visit.
  • The caller names the player and the hole before every visit, and after it says how it went in golf words: “Birdie”, “Par”, “Bogey”.
  • A wrong dart? Tap its chip and correct it, just like in any other game. The strokes and the scorecard follow.

Tips

How to play under par

  • Know when to stop. The last dart counts, and a birdie in hand beats a double bogey risked. Stop after a good dart.
  • Playing best dart? Then bank a par first: the first dart in the fat inner single is a 3 in the bag. Go for the double with the other two.
  • Aim at the triple. It is worth 2, and a slip either way still lands on the number: 3 on the inside, 4 on the outside. Only the wrong number costs you the full 5.
  • Play the round, not the hole. The scorecard shows where you stand to par. Two strokes ahead? Take the safe par. Behind? Go for the double.
  • Great practice in disguise: every number on the board, doubles and triples all the way round, without it counting against your average.
