English Cricket

English Cricket is bat against ball on the dartboard, also known as Wickets and Runs or Bowler and Batter. The batter scores everything over 40 as runs, the bowler aims at the bull to take wickets. Apart from the name it has little in common with Cricket, where you close numbers.

  • Exactly two sides, bots welcome
  • Ten wickets an innings, or five for a quick game
  • Runs over 40, wickets on the bull
  • Unrated, so it never touches your average

Bull: 1 wicket lost

Anna was all out for 112, so Ben needs 113. His trebles make 117, 77 of it over 40, but the 25 costs him a wicket. Then Anna bowls at the bull, and Ben has one more visit to get the last runs. Drawn the way the app shows it.

The rules

How English Cricket works

This is a different game from Cricket. Nobody closes numbers here: one side scores runs, the other takes wickets.

  1. Bat and bowl in turnsOne side bats, the other bowls. You take turns visit by visit, and the batter throws first.
  2. Runs over 40The batter adds up the visit. Whatever is over 40 counts as runs: 60 is 20 runs, 140 is 100. A visit of 40 or less brings nothing.
  3. Keep off the bullA 25 costs the batter one wicket, the bullseye two. Neither adds a single point to the visit.
  4. The bowler aims at the bullFor the bowler only the bull counts: 25 takes one wicket, 50 takes two. Every other dart does nothing.
  5. Swap and chaseOnce ten wickets have fallen the innings is over and the sides swap. The second batter has to pass the first one’s runs. All out on the same runs is a drawn leg, all out short of them loses.

Batting

Runs over 40

Five visits of a batter and what they bring. The bar shows the visit, the line marks 40.

    Bull: 1 wicket lost

The 25 adds nothing and costs a wicket. The trebles still make 77 runs.

The bullseye costs two wickets. The other darts make 80, so 40 runs.

Bowling

Only the bull takes wickets

The bowler has one target. Four visits and the wickets they take.

The second innings

Swap sides and chase the runs

After all out the first batter bowls. From there the leg ends in one of three ways.

  1. All out for 112Target 113
    Innings 1 · Anna112
    Innings 2 · Ben–

Anna’s tenth wicket falls on 112. The sides swap: Ben bats, Anna bowls, and Ben needs 113.

  2. Ben wins the leg3 wickets to spare
    Innings 1 · Anna112
    Innings 2 · Ben115

Ben passes 112 and the leg is over on the spot, whatever wickets he has left.

  3. Drawn legAll out on the same runs
    Innings 1 · Anna112
    Innings 2 · Ben112

Ben’s last wicket falls with the scores level. The leg counts for nobody.

  4. Anna wins the leg15 runs short
    Innings 1 · Anna112
    Innings 2 · Ben98

Ben is all out before he gets there. Anna’s 112 are enough.

Settings

Ten wickets or five

English Cricket has one setting of its own: how many wickets an innings lasts.

  • 10 wicketsDefault
    Innings 1 · Anna0
    • Wickets 10

The classic innings. Each side bats until ten wickets have fallen, so a leg takes a good while.

  • 5 wicketsQuicker
    Innings 1 · Anna0
    • Wickets 5

Half the wickets, a quick game. Two bullseyes from the bowler and most of the innings is gone.

In the game

What you see on screen

Both innings at the top, your visit in the middle.

  • The innings: runs and a dot for every wicket still standing, for both sides. In the second innings a line counts down the chase, for example Ben needs 6 more runs.
  • Batting: the middle reads Batting · runs over 40 and shows the total of your visit with the runs it brings, for example +77. The hint says Everything over 40 is runs. Keep off the bull, in the chase 6 runs to win.
  • Bowling: Bowling · aim at the bull, with the wickets still standing as the big number. The bull lights up on the board.
  • Every dart: its chip says what it did, for example 60 points, 1 wicket lost, 2 wickets or off target.
  • All out: All out for 112, together with the target for the other side, Target 113.

Setup

Start a game

Open Party & duels in the game setup and pick English Cricket, or search for it by name. The rest works like any match.

  • PlayersExactly two sides at this board. Play a friend or a bot. A bot bats on the treble 20 and bowls at the bull.
  • TeamsWith three players or more, Sridu makes two teams. Each team is one side, and its players take turns visit by visit.
  • Wickets10 (the default) or 5. See the settings.
  • LegsOne leg, first to 2, first to 3 or more. The sides take turns batting first. A drawn leg counts for nobody, and in a match of one leg it ends the game as a draw.
  • Who throws firstThe first player in the list, a bull-off or random. Whoever throws first bats first.
  • UnratedEnglish Cricket doesn’t count towards your average, statistics or leaderboards. Only your wins are recorded.

Tips

How to win at English Cricket

  • Bat on the big trebles. The first 40 of a visit are lost anyway, so everything above them counts in full. A treble 20 is worth 60 runs once you are past 40.
  • Stay away from the middle. A batting dart that drifts into the bull costs a wicket, the bullseye two. Don’t aim anywhere near it.
  • As bowler, every dart goes at the bull. Nothing else counts, so there is no safe dart to throw. The 25 is the bigger target, the bullseye takes two.
  • Count the chase. In the second innings you only have to pass the target. With 6 runs to get, a visit of 46 is enough, so there is no need to force trebles.
  • Good bull practice. Every second visit of a leg goes at the bull, which helps with bull finishes and bull-offs.
