Darts games for kids and the whole family

The best darts games for kids are High Score, Around the Clock, Dart Bingo and Tic-Tac-Toe, because every hit counts and a game is over in minutes. Start young children on a soft-tip or magnetic board, keep an adult at the oche and use a closer throwing line until the darts reach the board.

In short

  • Safety first: one thrower at a time, everyone behind them, nobody at the board until the last dart is thrown.
  • Age: there is no official minimum. Magnetic or soft-tip darts for little ones, steel-tip once a child follows the rules every time.
  • Setup: a lower board and a closer line are fine as house rules. Move back as they grow.
  • Games: High Score and Around the Clock first, then Bingo, Tic-Tac-Toe and Darts Football.

Safety first

How do you play darts safely with kids?

Play darts safely with kids by keeping one simple order: one thrower, everyone else behind them, and nobody walks to the board until all three darts are thrown. An adult stays at the board for the whole game, whatever darts you use.

Do

  • Stand behind the thrower, never beside the board
  • Wait for “darts out” before anyone fetches them
  • Let an adult pull steel-tip darts for small children
  • Hang the board away from doors and walkways
  • Put the darts away, out of reach, after the game

Don’t

  • Throw while someone is near the board
  • Hand darts to each other point first
  • Throw at anything but the board
  • Leave children alone with steel-tip darts
  • Play on a slippery floor or in socks on tiles

Little ones forget rules in the heat of the game. A strip of tape on the floor for the throwing line and one for the “wait here” spot behind it make the order easy to see. A mat or old rug under the board catches bounce-outs and saves the floor.

From what age?

What age can kids play darts?

There is no official minimum age for darts. What matters is that your child keeps to the safety rules every single time, and that also decides which darts make sense.

A rough guide could look like this. You know your child best, so treat the ages as a starting point, not a rule.

  1. From about 3Velcro balls or magnetic darts. No points, nothing sharp, first throws with a parent.
  2. From about 6Soft-tip darts with plastic tips on a soft-tip board, with an adult watching.
  3. From about 8 to 10Steel-tip darts on a bristle board, once the child waits for “darts out” without being told.
  4. TeensThe full setup and the full rules, and youth or club darts if they catch the bug.

Magnetic

  • Blunt darts, safe for toddlers
  • Cheap, hangs on any door
  • Darts slide and bounce off
  • No real practice for later

Soft-tip

  • Plastic tips are far less likely to hurt
  • Electronic boards count for you
  • Louder, tips snap
  • Line usually at 2.44 m

Steel-tip

  • The real game, quiet in sisal
  • A good board lasts years
  • Sharp points, adult supervision
  • Needs a scorer or an app

The steel-tip vs soft-tip guide compares both systems in detail, and the dartboard buying guide helps when you pick the board.

House rules

How high should a dartboard be for kids?

For kids, hang the board so the bull sits roughly at their eye height and move the throwing line closer until most darts reach the board. Official rules don’t set a height or distance for children, so this is a house rule, and a perfectly normal one.

The official steel-tip setup is a bull 1.73 m above the floor and a line 2.37 m from the board face. Your child grows into it step by step.

1.73 m2.37 m closer line eye height Official: bull 1.73 m, line 2.37 mKids: bull at eye height, closer line
Lower board, closer line. The grey marks are the official setup. Move the green ones back towards them as your child grows.
  • Several lines on the floor: tape marks at different distances, so each player throws from their own
  • A board you can lower: a stand or a second hook makes the switch quick
  • Move back step by step: once most darts land in the board, try the next line
  • Same line for everyone in a family match? Then give the kids a head start in the game instead, see fair play

Scoring by camera? If you move a board that Sridu watches with webcams, run the calibration again afterwards so it keeps counting the right fields. Without cameras you simply tap each dart on the screen, which works with any board, magnetic and soft-tip included.

Exact measurements for the official setup, including the 2.93 m diagonal check, are in the dartboard dimensions guide.

At a glance

Which darts games are best for kids?

The best darts games for kids have a clear target, reward every hit and never punish a bad visit too hard. These ten work from the first throws up to confident young players.

First throws

What are easy darts games for young kids?

Easy darts games for young kids have one target at a time or reward anything on the board. Around the Clock and Dart Bingo also teach where the numbers sit.

Around the Clock: 1, 2 and 3 done in one visit, the 4 is next.

Around the Clock, from the first throws

  1. Start on the 1Any part of the number counts, the thin rings too.
  2. Hit it, move onThe next number straight away, even in the same visit.
  3. Finish on the bullOr skip it for little ones and stop at the 20.

Easier: a head start of a few numbers for the youngest. Play Around the Clock

Dart Bingo in Sridu: Mia’s 3 by 3 card with the 7, 9 and 19 crossed off in green, and the hint “Closest row: 11”.
Dart Bingo in Sridu: each child has their own card, and the app shows which field finishes the next row.

Dart Bingo, from the first throws

  1. A card eachNine fields from the board, different for every player.
  2. Hit a field, cross it offOnly your own card counts.
  3. A full row winsAcross, down or diagonally. BINGO!

Easier: the card with whole numbers, where any part of the number counts.

  • High ScoreThree darts a visit, every dart scores what it hits, and the highest total after a few rounds wins. Nothing to explain, and big visits get a cheer.
  • Cricket without pointsFor older beginners: only close the 15 to the 20 and the bull, three marks each. The first to close everything wins.

Ages 8 and up

Which darts games do older kids enjoy most?

Older kids love darts games that copy games they already know, like Tic-Tac-Toe, Connect Four, Battleship or football. They aim at specific fields, so they practise without noticing.

Tic-Tac-Toe in Sridu on the easy grid: Mia’s green crosses and Leo’s cream noughts, with cells for numbers such as 17 and 19 and for points such as 55 plus in the middle.
Tic-Tac-Toe on the easy grid. Numbers to hit, a few cells for points, and the hardest cell always in the middle.

Tic-Tac-Toe, 2 players or 2 teams

  1. Pick a cellEach cell names a target, such as a number or a points total for the visit.
  2. Hit it to take itYour first dart on a free target puts your mark there.
  3. Three in a rowAcross, down or diagonally. Blocking counts just as much.

Easier: the easy level, with plain numbers instead of doubles and trebles. Play Tic-Tac-Toe

2011841361015217319716811149125
Darts Football: the bull wins the ball, then score goals on the numbers in order.
2011841361015217319716811149125
Battleship: a ship of three in the outer singles. One hit, so the rest lies right next to it.
  • Darts FootballKick-off on the bull. Only the player on the ball scores goals, the other one goes for the bull to win it back. For kids, set goals to the singles and the range to 1 to 5.
  • BattleshipEach side hides a fleet on the board, then you take turns firing three darts. Water, hit or sunk: the first to sink the whole fleet wins.
  • Connect FourSeven numbers start seven columns. Hit a column’s field to drop a stone, and every stone reveals a new field above it. Four in a row wins.
  • Hare & HoundsThe hare runs round the board from the 20, the hound chases one number behind. Catch it, or get home first.

Everyone together

Which darts games can the whole family play?

Golf, Beat It and team games work best for the whole family, because luck and nerves even out the levels. Grandparents, parents and kids can all win a round.

201184136
Golf, hole 4: double 1 stroke, treble 2, inner single 3, outer single 4. A miss counts 5.

Golf, 1 or more players

  1. Nine holesHole 1 is the 1, hole 2 the 2, par 3 on each.
  2. Count strokesUp to three darts, and the last one counts. A double is a hole in one.
  3. Fewest strokes winAdd up the nine holes, lowest total takes it.

Easier: let the best dart of the three count, and give the kids a few strokes off.

  • Beat ItScore more than the player before you, or lose a life. A weak visit hands the next player an easy target, so the youngest often win.
  • Teams of big and smallOne adult and one child share a score and throw in turns. Works with Tic-Tac-Toe, Golf and High Score.
  • Killer with extra livesFor confident kids: give them a life or two more, or make them a killer from the first dart.

Darts at a kids’ party

  • Short games: three or four rounds of High Score, then swap
  • Teams of three: kids share a score and take turns, so nobody waits long
  • Soft-tip or magnetic when many children are in the room
  • One adult per board, whose only job is the board
  • Prizes for moments: best throw, first bull, funniest bounce-out

Learning on the side

Do kids learn maths with darts?

Yes, darts trains mental arithmetic: adding up three darts, doubling and tripling, and later subtracting in countdown games. Let the maths grow with the child, though, because a game that turns into homework stops being fun.

Add up the visitCount down from 10120+5+1=26101−26=75
From adding to subtracting. First the visit, later the countdown in a short game of 101.
  1. CountingAround the Clock and Bingo: which number comes next, where is it on the board?
  2. AddingHigh Score: three darts make one sum, up to 60 per dart.
  3. Times tablesDoubles and trebles turn a 7 into 14 or 21.
  4. SubtractingA game of 101 with any finish, once adding is easy.

Let them call it first. Have your child say the score out loud, then check it on the screen. In Sridu’s online darts scorer the total appears after every dart, so kids get instant feedback and nobody argues over the sums.

Fair play

How do you keep it fair when kids play adults?

Give the child a head start in the game instead of letting them win on purpose. Kids notice when grown-ups miss deliberately, and a fair handicap makes their win real.

GameHead start for the childHarder for the adult
High ScoreStart on 50 or 100 pointsOnly the 20 counts
Around the ClockA few numbers aheadDoubles only, or fewer darts a visit
GolfBest dart counts, a few strokes offLast dart counts
Darts FootballA goal or two aheadNo head start
Beat It, KillerAn extra lifeOne life fewer
  • Handicaps per playerIn Sridu you set these per player in the game setup, from a points head start to extra lives, strokes in Golf or goals in Darts Football. The app then plays by them.
  • A bot at their levelNobody to play? A bot opponent can be set as low as an average of 15, so a child can play a close game alone.

More ideas for mixed groups are in the darts games guide, and the play darts against the computer page explains the bots.

FAQ

Questions about darts with kids

What is the easiest darts game for kids?

High Score, because every dart that lands on the board scores and the highest total wins. Around the Clock comes next and teaches the numbers in order.

What age can kids play darts?

There is no official minimum age. Toddlers can throw velcro balls or magnetic darts, soft-tip darts with supervision suit many children from about 6, and steel-tip darts make sense once a child follows the safety rules every time, as a rough guide around 8 to 10.

How high should a dartboard be for a child?

Hang it so the bull is roughly at the child’s eye height, and use a closer throwing line. That is a house rule: the official height of 1.73 m and the 2.37 m line are for adults and teens.

Are soft-tip darts safe for kids?

Soft-tip darts have plastic tips and are much less likely to hurt anyone than steel-tip darts, but they are not toys. Keep the same rules: one thrower, everyone behind, an adult watching.

Is a magnetic dartboard good for kids?

For first throws, yes. The darts are blunt and the board is cheap. Darts slide and bounce more than on a real board, so move on once your child wants to aim properly.

Which darts games work at a kids’ party?

Short games for teams: a few rounds of High Score, Dart Bingo or Tic-Tac-Toe in teams. Use soft-tip or magnetic darts and have one adult whose only job is the board.

Do kids need to do the scoring themselves?

No. A scoring app such as Sridu adds up every dart, so kids can focus on throwing. Saying the score out loud first and checking it on the screen is a nice way to practise maths.
